Drawn by William Penn’s promise of religious tolerance, German religious sectarians following a multitude of faiths fled persecution in Europe for new lives in Pennsylvania. Here they resettled in faith-based communities on the colony’s frontier, including Ephrata in Lancaster County, where the celibate followers of Conrad Beissel lived in sex segregated dormitories.
