From 1838 to 1844 Edgar Allen Poe lived in Philadelphia, the home of the American Gothic novel. There, he worked as an editor at Burton's Gentleman's Magazine and Graham’s Magazine, and wrote some of his most popular tales, including “The Murders of the Rue Morgue,” “The Gold Bug,” “The Raven,” and “The Pit and the Pendulum,” which was first published in an 1843 Philadelphia literary annual.
