Tired of what she saw as the false representations of black life in American fiction, Jessie Redmon Fauset wrote her first novel, There is Confusion, to explore the real challenges that middle-class African Americans faced in their lives. There is Confusion would be her most commercially successful novel. After publishing it in 1924, Fauset moved to Paris to study at the Sorbonne.
