Born in Philadelphia to a well-to-do family, George B. McClellan (1826-1885) served as commander of the Army of the Potomac before Lincoln removed him in 1862 for his insubordination and reluctance to commit the Army in combat. In 1864, McClellan accepted the Democratic nomination to run against Lincoln for the presidency, then split with the party over its an anti-war platform, which called for a negotiated settlement with the Confederacy. From 1878 to 1881, he would serve as the governor of New Jersey.
