The Carlisle Indian Industrial School was the most famous off-reservation boarding school in America. Drawing Native students from around the country, the government-run school offered a curriculum steeped in manual and vocational training. The uniforms and division of ranks into boys and girls reflect the School's emphasis on military-style discipline and organization.
