The stark, smoky, and complex landscapes of Pennsylvania industries inspired many 20th century painters. Finding Pittsburgh "bountifully endowed by nature with scenes of grandeur and enthralling picturesqueness," painter Aaron Henry Gorson (1872-1933) is noted for his paintings of that city's mills.
