In the late 1800s, a number of Pennsylvania's captains of industry used some of their wealth to support education in the Commonwealth. In 1891, Philadelphia financier Anthony J. Drexel founded the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry to provide educational opportunities in the "practical arts and sciences" for working women and men of all backgrounds. Reorganized as the Drexel Institute of Technology in 1936, the school became Drexel University in 1970.
