A Philadelphia patent lawyer born into a well-to-do family in 1842, Joshua Pusey lost part of his jaw when a bullet struck it and tore through his throat during the battle of Fredericksburg, in 1862. Left for dead, Pusey pulled himself back to Union lines and recovered, but wore a goatee for the rest of his life to hide the scars.
