Coeducational from the start, Millersville offered a full complement of athletic programs for both men and women. In the late 1800s, American colleges embraced physical education as an important counterpart to the rigorous academic training teachers received. Basketball was a particularly popular sport for the Millersville "ladies" and "gentlemen."
