In October of 1948, fume-laden smoke and fog from the Donora Zinc Works killed 19 people, hospitalized 40, and left thousands gasping for air. Insisting that the Zinc Works was not to blame for the acid ridden smog, company officials kept the plant open until 17 had died, then made sure that an official report exonerated the company of all wrongdoing.
