In the early 1900s, passionate fans packed the stands of amateur and semi-professional football teams in Pennsylvania coal towns. By the early 1920s, the best of them all was the Pottsville Maroons. Joining the fledging National Football League in 1925, the Maroons their first year in the league drubbed the Chicago Cardinals by a score of 21-7 in the NFL's first championship game.
