Outraged that existing adoption services considered mixed-race, disabled, and older children unadoptable, Pearl Buck in 1949 established Welcome House, which has assisted in the placement of more than 6,000 children. In 1964 she started the Pearl S. Buck Foundation, which has raised millions of dollars for the adoption of mixed race children-Buck coined the term "Amerasian" - often abandoned by their American fathers stationed in the Far East. Buck herself adopted and raised nine children.
