When he took office on January 15, 1935, George Earle became Pennsylvania's first Democratic governor since James Pattison, whose second term ended in January, 1895. Standing on the reviewing stand, left to right, are Senator Joseph Guffey, Governor George Earle, Mrs. G.H. Earle and Harry Earle, son of the Governor. One of President Roosevelt's staunchest allies, Senator Guffey controlled federal patronage in the Commonwealth, which he attempted to use to build a permanent base for the Democratic party on Pennsylvania.
