Just days before the presidential election of 1936, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stopped at Harrisburg for a political rally on the steps of the Capital building. Accompanying him on the ride from the railroad station were Democratic Senator Joe Guffey, who controlled federal patronage in Pennsylvania, and Governor George Earle, who had launched his own "Little New Deal," after taking office in January, 1935.
