During the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project employed more than 5,000 artists on projects that emphasized American life and folk culture. Born in Philadelphia, children's author and illustrator Katherine Milhous (1894-1977) set all of her books in Pennsylvania. In the 1930s, Milhaus created this color woodblock poster while working for the WPA. In 1951, the American Library Association awarded her the Caldecott Medal for The Egg Tree, which she based on her family's Easter traditions.
