Less than a year after the stock market crash in October 1929, homeless Pennsylvanians who lost their jobs during the economic collapse were gathering in makeshift communities called "Hoovervilles." In Philadelphia, a group of men dug shelters into walls near the Philadelphia Art Museum. The arrow in this photo points to a cave, scooped out and braced, which sheltered three men who attempted to keep themselves warm with an open fire.
