The year 1919 witnessed an unprecedented wave of domestic bombings, and widespread fears that radicals would soon attempt to stage a violent revolution. On June 2, 1919, a bomb explosion damaged the home of Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer in Washington D.C. Palmer reassured the public that "These attacks will only increase the activities of our crime-detecting forces."
