In February 1928, a visit by four United States senators investigating an unconstitutional ban on picketing, meetings, and rallies by striking UMW miners brought national attention to Rossiter, Pennsylvania. After arriving in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Senator Frank Gooding told reporters, "It is inconceivable that such squalor, misery, and distress should be tolerated in the heart of one of the richest industrial centers of the world."
