Built about 1800, by Roland Curtin and remained in the possession and operated by the Curtin family to the last. After over 100 years of continuous operation, the furnace was finally blown out in 1926. Several years later the iron sheds burned to the ground. This was the last of the old charcoal furnaces in the state to make charcoal iron, and to have made it exclusively during its entire period of operation. During its earlier years of operation the furnace used the conventional type of overshot water wheel to drive the blast. Later this was replaced with a modern turbine wheel that had been installed in one of the abandoned canal locks, In April 1938 this turbine was sold for scrap.
