Cozy Poe Valley State Park is nestled in a rugged mountain valley in Centre County. Seemingly endless forests surround the 25-acre Poe Lake. The 620-acre state park is surrounded by Bald Eagle State Forest.
Boats with electric motors are permitted in Poe Lake. There are two launching areas and 15 seasonal mooring spaces on the 25-acre lake. Campers can moor their boats by the dam during their stay. Lake angling and ice fishing are popular at Poe Valley State Park. Common game species include brown and rainbow trout, catfish, pickerel, sunfish and perch. Penns Creek and Big Poe Creek are a short distance of the park and offer stream fishing.
Guided walks, amphitheater programs and other activities are offered in the summer. An environmental interpretive center is located behind the beach, which is open from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day unless posted otherwise.
The shaded picnic area by Poe Lake offers drinking water, playground areas, charcoal grills and charcoal disposal containers and accessible picnic tables. There are also two picnic pavilions.
The wooded campground has drinking water, rustic toilets and a dump station. Access is not guaranteed in the winter.
Poe Valley's hiking trails connect to the extensive trails of Bald Eagle State Forest. The hiking trails vary from easy to rugged, steep trails. The Mid State Trail passes through Poe Valley and is popular with backpackers and day hikers.
While no specific trails are provided for cross country skiing, skiers use local roads since only minimal snow plowing is done. Ice fishing and ice skating are popular, although no areas are specifically groomed for ice skating.
Registered snowmobiles may use the Big Poe Road in the park and state forest roads daily after the end of antlerless deer season. Drinking water, parking and rustic toilets are available in the park.
