S. B. Elliott is a quiet, rustic, mountaintop recreational area just off of Interstate 80 near the mid-point of the state. Once ravaged by the logging industry, the park now contains magnificent stands of maturing oak and maple that dominate the mountaintop. The park's rustic log cabins are perfect for a quiet getaway.
Picnicking amidst towering pines and oak trees with ample parking, tables and shelters is a treat for the whole family. Drinking water, garbage containers, com-posting restrooms and recycling areas are available throughout the park.
Fishing in small mountain streams surrounding the park offers sport for those who like to walk and fish in uncrowded streams for native and stocked trout.
Hiking trails take visitors to various places on the mountaintop while backpack hikers can get on the Quehanna Trail by way of the Central Pennsylvania Lumber Company Trail. The Quehanna Trail system offers over 75 miles of hiking in various combinations from one overnight to seven overnights without retracing your steps by way of its northern and southern loops and connecting trails. This trail also connects onto the Susquehannock Trail system.
A 25-site camping area, across from the log cabin park office, offers modern restrooms but no showers and a sanitary dump station. The restroom and site seven are accessible. The campground is open from the second Friday in April to late December. All sites are first-come, first-served. Six rustic cabins are available for rent.
During the winter months, the main parking lot is plowed to allow registered snowmobiles to unload and operate on the roads and trails in the Moshannon State Forest. Snowmobiling is prohibited from September 25 to the last day of antlerless deer season in December. Daily snowmobiling begins after antlerless deer season.
