About 30 miles south of Pittsburgh, Washington was once a hot spot on the National Road, the nation's first interstate highway. Stretching from Baltimore to Vandalia, Illinois, the National Road was meant to connect the coastal United States with the frontiers of the West. Also in Washington are the National Trolley Museum, with antique trolley car rides, photography exhibits, and more, and the LeMoyne House, the first National Historic Landmark of the Underground Railroad in Pennsylvania and one of only a handful in the entire nation. Washington also boasts a fine assortment of shops, including antique dealers, art galleries, open-air markets, and more. And dozens of festivals take place each year, including Pike Days, celebrating the National Road, the Covered Bridge Festival, the Pumpkin Festival, and the Washington County Agricultural Fair, one of the oldest continually running agricultural events statewide.
