Named for Revolutionary War hero General Richard Butler, Butler county's roots run as far back as 1753, when the French began to establish forts in the area. At that time, the Iroquois Confederacy controlled the land. The activities of the French contributed to the onset of the French and Indian war. Later, after the Revolution, the county was founded and named, and the village of Butler designated as the county seat. Between the village's charter as a borough in 1828 and its growth to a current population of more than 30,000, Butler has been called home by John Roebling, inventor of wire cable (such as the kind that supports the Brooklyn Bridge, which Roebling designed), and William Smith, who helped Edwin Drake drill the first oil well in Titusville. To experience the rich history of Butler, stop by the Butler County Historical Society, or visit one of the historic sites they operate, including the Cooper Cabin Pioneer Homestead, the 1828 Lowrie-Shaw House, and the 1838 Red School House, now a living history museum.
