On a bright August day, in an open field surrounded by woods and hills, native people in buckskin and bright cloth dance around the campfire to the sound of drums and chanting. The smell of venison, bear and buffalo fill the air. Stories, unchanged for a thousand years, are being told. Hands touch stone, beaded jewelry, pottery and leather dresses. People eat beneath a pavilion, surrounded by brightly painted story poles. You may think you have stepped back in time, but you have simply stepped into a place like no other in Pennsylvania.
On the third weekend in August, the Thunder Mountain Lenape Nation will host their Native American Festival and invite the public to participate. Come and see things that have remained unchanged for a thousand years, except for the tell-tale signs of plastic canopies, microphones, and cars pulling into the parking lot.
For two days, Native Americans from all over the country will gather in Saltsburg, Indiana County, PA to exhibit and sell their hand-made items, dance, play the flute, and share their culture with the public. This year's festival will take place on August 19 - 20, 2006. Admission: Children attend free, adults will be charged $3.00.
