This book details the history of one-room schoolhouses in Wisconsin, from the establishment of the first school in 1791 to the 1960s, when school consolidation was finally complete, along with memories and recollections from students and teachers.

Bial, Raymond. One Room School. New York, NY: Houghton-Mifflin, 1999.

In this pictorial history of the one-room schoolhouse in the United States, Bial briefly discusses the emergence of public education in Massachusetts in 1647, and notes that the demands of rural life had an impact on the form of education on the frontier and led to the development of this type of facility throughout the country.

This book pays homage to the American icon that is the one-room schoolhouse and is a tour of these structures still standing, detailing the best examples from the forty-eight contiguous states. It explores working schools, some in existence for more than 100 years, schools restored as historic museums, and schools converted into private residences, and includes "conversations" with past and present one-room schoolhouse teachers.

Built in 1861, at a cost of $315, this one room school was one of nine one room schools in the Township of Forest Lake, Pennsylvania. Located in Northern Pennsylvania's Susquehanna County, on Route 267, a half mile south of Birchardville, and five and a half miles north of Lawtown, the school has been turned into a museum. The museum is managed by the Birchardville School Historical and Educational Association.

This site provides information and illustrations for the Little Red School House was constructed in 1838, and was the first public school built in Butler as a direct result of the Public School Act of 1836. It is now a living history museum, which recreates the one-room school experience for school classes.

Designed like a newsletter, the site offers articles on one-room school discipline, early classroom learning tools, as well as one-room school house news around the nation. Kibler School is a restored one-room school built in 1898 and located in Towamensing Township, Pennsylvania. Kibler School contains books, desks, water jug, coal stove, teacher's desk, cabinet museum, and other materials found in a typical one-room school from 1900 to 1950. This is a great site for information and examples of typical one-room schoolhouse life.
