Palmer Raids: Reasonable Reaction or Hysterical Hype
Assessment Strategies

Students work in cooperative groups and individually throughout this lesson. There are multiple opportunities for teachers to assess student progress and understanding. These include oral responses from students as well as their written responses to the primary document analysis. Student work on Student Worksheet 2-Cartoon Analysis Worksheet gives the individual student a chance to work out the meaning of the cartoon before sharing the highlights with his/her group. Student work on Student Worksheet 3 - Political Cartoon Analysis Chart requires students to work cooperatively and think critically based on their interpretation of primary source documents. The teacher will set the proper context for the lesson by introducing a political cartoon and explaining the techniques used to interpret this type of document. Student work on Student Worksheet 4 - Political Cartoon Analysis Questions requires both individual and cooperative effort. Students will answer the questions individually for homework and then share their responses both with a partner and with the class.
