Your Land is My Land: A Look at Bootleg Coal Mining During the Depression

1. The class could create a play or scene using the characters students have developed. Students could produce a set-design, specific dialogue, costume, and stage directions. 2. The class could hold a debate: one side representing the bootleg coal miner, the other side representing the coal owner. 3. Students could use Student Handout 4-"Digging in a Dog Hole: Independent Anthracite Mining in the 20th Century, by Patrick Shea for further research on bootleg coal mining. 4. Bootleg coal mining came out of the need for miners to survive the Great Depression. Student could look at how people in other occupations–such as farmers–managed to survive through this era. 5. The Student Handout 1-Great Depression-Causes and Effects mentioned federal programs created to ameliorate the effects and recover from the Great Depression.
