The Gettysburg Address: An American Treasure

Present three poems about Lincoln to the class: Vachel Lindsay's "Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight," and two Walt Whitman poems, "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," and "Oh, Captain, My Captain." Ask students to alter one of the poems by inserting a stanza or stanzas about the significance of the Gettysburg Address.
