In 1891 Katharine Marie Drexel, the daughter of a wealthy Philadelphia family, founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament as a religious order dedicated to serving the poor. Sister Katharine then devoted much of her energy and family fortune to establishing schools for African Americans and Native Americans, a mission depicted in this mural. In 2000 Sister Katharine became the fourth American citizen to be canonized as a Saint.
