"They did take eight young colored men and boys along with them, in spite of their parents pleading. I fear we will never see them again, unless they can escape." These words were recorded in the diary of William Heyser, a prominent Chambersburg business man under the date October 15, 1862. Heyser was writing four days after General J.E.B. Stuart had raided Chambersburg with a cavalry force of some 1,800 troopers. Besides the loss of hundreds of horses, 500 guns stolen, and the destruction of $250,000 of railroad property, Stuart's 1862 raid would be easy on the citizens of Chambersburg compared to what was in store for them in the summers of 1863 and 1864.
