First Transcontinental Railroad

On May 10, 1869, the driving of the golden spike at Promontory Summit, Utah, completed the nation's first transcontinental railroad, by uniting the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific. After the debacle with the Erie Railroad, Gould went on to serve as president or director of 17 major railroads, including the Union Pacific.
