Gemeinhaus

Credit: Moravian Archives

This community building was the center of life in the early Moravian Community. Here members worshiped in the Saal, or meeting room. The focus of the Community was on serving and remaining close to God. In each Moravian Community the Gemeinhaus was usually the first home built. It was the center of the Community and their place of worship. It provided living spaces for unmarried men and women. There was also a hall for fellowship within the structure. The Gemeinhaus served as a meeting place for Colonial leaders such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and General Lafayette.
