In 1919, soldiers returning from World War I erected a monument for their fallen comrades on the Boal Estate, near State College, PA. After other units of the 28th Division erected their own memorials, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1931 purchased what had become known as the "shrine." There, in 1969, it opened the Pennsylvania Military Museum. In 1997, the Commonwealth dedicated a World War II memorial, which includes the names of the members of the 28th who died in battle during that war.
