A native of Pittsburgh, PA, and a Naval Academy graduate, Lewis Hyde Brereton saw combat aganist German Folkers over France during WWI, and held key Air Force commands in the Pacific, Middle East, and European theaters during WWII. In late September 1944, Lieutenant General Brereton commanded the First Allied Airborne Army during Operation Market Garden, a key military component of the Allied attempt to cross the Rhine river into Germany.
