James Bland was buried in a pauper's grave after his death in 1911 from tuberculosis. In 1940, white Virginians adopted " Carry Me Back to Old Virginia" as their state's official song and resurrected Bland as a symbol of the harmony between the races under segregation. In 1946, Virginia governor William Tuck presided at the dedication of this granite monument placed at Bland's recently rediscovered grave in Merion, Pennsylvania.
