In 1940, Victor Schertzinger directed Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in the first of their highly successful "Road to…" film comedies. In 1941 Schertzinger directed them again in Road to Zanzibar the last film he completed before his death. Hope and Crosby's ad-libbing proved quite a challenge for Schertzinger. Crosby would later recall him leafing bewildered through the script, looking for the lines they were making up on the fly.
