When he was twenty-three Schertzinger composed "Marcheta; Love song of old Mexico," which would soon become a standard. From the late 1920s until his death in 1941, he would compose a succession of popular songs, including "Tangerine" (1942), first made a hit by fellow Pennsylvanian Jimmy Dorsey.
