In 1933, Jay Levison left western Pennsylvania to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied choral music, led a dance band, and met his songwriting partner, Ray Evans. After graduating in 1937, the two young songwriters moved to New York, where Levison began to compose under the name Jay Livingston.
