Minstrel shows faded in popularity in the late 1800s, but they held on in Philadelphia, to which Bland moved for a job with one of the nation's last resident minstrel shows, just a few years before his death in 1911. The last of Philadelphia's black-face theaters, Dumont's Minstrel Theater, located at 9th and Arch Streets, burned down in 1929.
