After catching the attention of Louis B. Mayer while singing at the Hollywood Bowl, Lanza signed a seven-year film contract with Metro Goldwyn Mayer. His portrayal of Enrico Caruso inThe Great Caruso, (1951) was a box office success, but earned him the criticism of music critics unhappy with his leap from the concert stage to motion pictures.
