Born in Catasauqua, PA., William R. Jones (1839-1889) worked as a machinist before fighting with the 133rd Pennsylvania volunteers during the Civil War. After the war, Jones joined John Fritz at Cambria and there was part of the team that produced the nation's first Bessemer steel. In the 1870s Jones helped design the Edgar Thomson Works for Carnegie Steel Company, and patented more than 50 inventions for Carnegie before his death in an industrial accident at the Thomson works in 1889.
