In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Pennsylvania and the nation went through a massive wave of bridge construction. Erected in 1914 by the Fort Pitt Bridge Works, Pittsburgh's 2,100-foot Bloomfield Bridge spanned the Monongahela River across the Bloomfield ravine. Active in the middle Atlantic states, the Fort Pitt Bridge Works constructed numerous railroad bridges for the Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central, and other large railways. The Bloomfield Bridge was demolished in 1980.
