Angered at the end of war-time controls, steel workers in January 1946 staged the greatest walkout in the history of the industry, as close to 750,000 shut down 1,200 plants in 30 states. Six years later President Harry Truman would seize the steel industry after the major steel companies rejected federal Wage Stabilization Board recommendations.
