When this striking photograph was taken in 1907, George Rosenkrans, age twenty-six, was still living at home with his parents. After their deaths, he would continue to live in the family home alone, sleeping under newspapers and a single blanket in the one corner of the living room where the roof did not leak, into the mid-1940s.
