In 1822, Jacob Cist, the first great promoter of the use of anthracite coal for home heating and blast furnaces, made this drawing od mine owned by Abijah Smith & Co. More than a decade earlier, the SMith's had used a grate designed by Wilkes-Barre businessman Jesse Fell, to convince farmers along the Susquehanna River to burn coal in their fireplaces.
