Philadelphia Mint

Soon after ratification of the Constitution, the federal government created a national mint to make coinage, bearing the name "United States of America," to serve the needs of commerce and better establish a national identity. After passage of the Mint Act of 1792, the first national mint was constructed in Philadelphia at the corner of 7th and Filbert Streets, and placed under the direction of David Rittenhouse.
