The Forten family remained active in the struggle for racial equality long after James Forten's death in 1842. During the Civil War, his granddaughter Charlotte Forten Grimke (1837-1914) became the first black teacher on South Carolina's Sea Islands, and published an account of her mission, "Life on the Sea Islands," in the May and June 1864 editions of the Atlantic Monthly.
