The "Gray Comanches" painting depicts Confederate Colonel Elijah White leading the 35th Battalion 
Virginia Cavalry into the center of the battle.

In this painting Don Troiani depicts the 35th Virginia Cavalry Battalion charging Union artillery. Commanded by Elijah White, the "Comanches" was they were known, were attached to Ewell's corps in its march into Pennsylvania. On July 1, the 35th led Gordon's brigade toward Gettysburg and the thunderous sound of A.P. Hill's guns.
