Photograph of two members of the 22nd NY Militia.

This 1861 photograph shows two members of the 22nd New York militia near Harpers Ferry. When the Confederates in June of 1863 threatened Pennsylvania's state capital of Harrisburg, few Pennsylvanians rallied to Governor Curtin's called for volunteers. New York came to the rescue with an offer of 8,000 to 10,000 militia, who were rushed to Harrisburg by rail. The 22nd New York was among those troops and saw battle on the western side of the Susquehanna in the area around Sporting Hill.
