When the Confederates crossed into Pennsylvania, Brigadier General Joseph F. Knipe, a regular army officer and Harrisburg resident, was home on leave recovering from malaria. Knipe was given the near impossible task of delaying the advance of an entire Confederate army corps of experienced combat veterans at Carlisle. After advancing over 50 miles beyond the main defenses, Knipe held the Rebels in check for six precious days.
